June 2020 MC (Mid Covid):

“Welcome to the new normal,” a phrase most are likely hearing from every media outlet around the World. A resonating, station like echo playing in the background whilst you beaver away at your temporary home workstation. But is it a new normal? Are we creating new ways or simply regressing to traditional behaviours? I for one have started purchasing meat from a local butcher and have organised a milkman (or should I say person?) to deliver our accompaniments. Evoking memories of my grandparents non centralised heated home; Grandad absorbedly tucking into his jam laden toast and Gran ruminating over her bran flakes. Simpler times.

Golf isn’t just a Sport, it’s a Lifestyle:

You have to allow it to suck you into its universe, to plunge yourself (and arguably your family) into it. Many strategies have emerged to facilitate bite size participation, however, much like Apple Computers and Tesla Motors, immersing yourself in the end to end experience is the best way to consume the product.

Golfers have become nomadic (and worse) over the years. They’ve capitalised on more relaxed visitor rights and rates, mainly caused by an oversupply of courses. But now, with access severely restricted for obvious reasons the nomads are being left out in the cold. And Golf Club Membership, much like insurance policies, are illustrating their value.

Why be a Member of a Club?

What’s the point? What value does it provide versus adopting a ‘Shackletonesk’ approach to playing the game? Here’s just a few:

  • Priority access/access in general: especially in the current lockdown climate

  • Ease and freedom of use: capacity to play 3/6/9 Holes

  • Cheaper (if a high frequency participant)

  • On hand expert advice and use of state of the art technological training aids (TrackMan etc), facilitating better performance

  • Access to and use of Additional Facilities e.g. Clubhouse, Restaurants, Practice Grounds, Snooker Rooms, Simulator's etc, (often with priority access/reduced cost)

  • Capability to attend additional activities: Member only nights, competitions, trips,  camps, clinics & seminars etc

  • Sense of Community & Belonging: ability to meet new people whilst consolidating existing friendships

Everybody’s reasons for playing are unique.

However, the binary element that connects us to the games matchless magnetism is its ability to assimilate into our DNA; to shape the way we live, if we allow it.

Join a club, meet kindred spirits and delight in the unattainable quest of mastering the greens and conquering the fairways.
